“You know those jeans that you have in the back of your closet that haven’t fit you in five years but you’re holding on to because what if they do fit you one day? Ya, you can just get rid of those. You don’t need to keep them.”
These three sentences were the foundation of a silly little TikTok/Reel that I made after I had finished doing my annual spring wardrobe clean out.
I didn’t really expect it to go anywhere, but it felt like something I should share. And it REALLY resonated with people. The number of comments and DMs I got about how they (mostly women), have so many clothes like this in their closets and they just can’t seem to get rid of them.
So many women dealt with the same thing that I do - keeping clothes when they no longer make us feel like our best selves.
It almost doesn’t matter if you never wear them. Just having them in your closet can make you feel dread every time you need to get dressed (I know this from experience). That old dress that you don’t wear anymore because it makes you feel bad about yourself continues to itch the back of your brain every time you see if hanging up in your closet. Even though you know you’re not going to wear it!
These kinds of clothes are full of all kinds of expectations. Why am I not thinner? Why doesn’t this fit me the way it used to? Why don’t my [insert body parts] look the way I want them to in this?
